bird

Why did this big
Black bird
With a red beak
Have her feathery chest
Pressed on the glass
Of the fourth floor
As though
She were showing off a medal?

Why did the bird
Employ all her talons
And skills
To remain on the sill
At all cost?

Her head was turned
To the side
And with one round eye
She was peering in
As though through a microscope.

You’re wonderful. Your poem is beautiful…

I’m excited from the flying start the site gets…

as usual, both beautiful and funny, which you’re kind of a genius at.

Your poems always feel to me like I am trying on a new brain. You have the most imaginative eye, and I can just hear your voice coming through all over. Congrats!

This is a poem of sharp images and impact, a highly visual poem, complete with the idea of the bird as a colorful medal! I can almost hear the thud, just before the poem begins . . . jarring and quizzical, sadly comic. It’s also quite a poignant comment on our impact on the natural world. So well done, Katya. Thank you.

Despite being separated by the glass, the speaker and the bird connect. A quirky and interesting poem, Katya.

We are all clinging to the ledge, peering in as though through a microscope. As Tolkien suggested, to bear a ring of power is to be alone. And alone we are. Such a world! Full of fear and doubt unless, as Yeats said, “Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing for every tatter in its mortal dress. You ask good questions of God. See!!! Look, there!!! and there!!!
