Multimedia Box: The Lines of Nazca – an Everlasting Mystery of Peru

August 27, 2009 by · No comments

There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle. – Albert Einstein

Above the red rocks of the Nazca desert of Peru – one of the most desolate and uninhabited areas of the country – an ancient South American civilization has left behind amazing evidence of its’ existence. Enormous geometrical shapes, large animal figures and long straight lines remain to kindle the imagination of many explorers.

What are the strange images like and what was their purpose? There are a good number of theories, but the mystical images remain as one of archeology’s greatest mysteries.

The fact that the images can only be seen from a great height appears to prove the theory that the Nazca people were able to fly above the Earth. Dr. Paul Cosock gives one of the most accepted explanations why these themes have been carved in the desert. He thinks that the figures and lines present “the biggest astronomical book in the world”. According to him, the images were used to predict the position of the stars and constellations at different times of the year.

The most interesting images include the figures of ancient birds, a monkey – probably symbolizing the sunrise of Benetnash – and many double lines, which look like airport landing strips. Unsolved by scientists, these mysterious images were included in UNESCO’s 1994 list of the world’s common inheritance.
