“The Adventures of Mr. Rouge in the Wild Inner East” is Voin de Voin’s first solo appearance in Bulgaria. It will kick off on 25 September with a musical theatre performance and remain in place as an exhibition until 22 October.

The performance is inspired by classical opera, with a libretto that will take the audience through various periods and stages of the history of the fictional Mr. Rouge. The music was composed by Voin de Voin and his colleague Joseph Marzolla, with whom in 1995 he co-founded the Dreamachine group for visual music in Paris. “The A. of Mr. R. in the WIE” is a series of events developed on the basis of linguistic phenomena, and looks for new metaphors – both visual and verbal.

After the performance, the set will remain in place as an illustration and evidence documenting the event. As a post-happening, “The Adventures of Mr. Rouge in the Wild Inner East” will acquire the characteristics of a collection of innermaginables – a term coined by Voin de Voin to denote “the mechanism of alienation and transformation along the thin line of mental limbo”. Labeled in this lively theatrical way, the set will continue to play its role in the absence of the performer.

Voin de Voin was born in 1978 in Sofia. He studied film and theatre in Paris and Amsterdam, where he received a Master’s degree from the DasArts International Laboratory for Professionals in the Performing Arts. He lives in Berlin and is currently working on the site-specific project “Your art is mine”. His work has been shown at the Melbourne International Theatre Festival, the Hetveem Theatre in Amsterdam, the Tanja Leighton Gallery in Berlin, the France Fiction Gallery in Paris, Karlsruhe Kunstverein in Karlsruhe, the Museum Cartier in Vienna and Island’s Living Art Museum.
