Photo: I’ll Never Grow Up

Flowers explode,
stars, sea serpents, Medusas,
rise up,
flower to purge their being,
disperse their form,
their color,
to be, after the elation, no more than stem of smoke
refallen in the violet-blue water of the bay.
Goodfellows, monsters, flakes of gold,
one after another,
surge, disappear…
children with their paper lanterns in hand, look, gaping;
and the round moon is below the black woods.

At the heart of Elective Affinities, remember,
there are these fireworks that one offers at the lake’s edge,
for people massed on the other shore,
noise without other wound than astonishment,
its echo in photo:
the Brooklyn Bridge,
Whistlerian in the summer night,
or in the winter, by the diurnal light
on this other photo,
the mirror of the bay, the lake, another bay;
celebration,
conjuring of wars, evocation of shadows
vanishing, a moment

CÉLÉBRATION

Des fleurs explosent,
des étoiles, des serpents de mer, des méduses,
se haussent,
fleurissent pour vomir leur être,
disperser leur forme,
leur couleur,
n’être plus, après l’élan, que tige de fumée
retombée dans l’eau violacée de la baie.
Bonshommes, monstres, pailletés d’or,
l’un après l’autre,
jaillissent, s’évanouissent…
les enfants avec, à la main, leurs lampions de papier, regardent, bouche bée ;
et la lune ronde est au-dessus des bois noirs.

Au cœur des Affinités électives, souviens-toi,
il y a ce feu d’artifice qu’on donne, au bord du lac,
pour le peuple, massé sur l’autre rive ;
bruit sans autre blessure que l’étonnement,
son écho en photo:
le pont de Brooklyn,
ainsi whistlérien, dans la nuit d’été,
ou dans l’hiver, à la lumière diurne,
sur cette autre photo,
le miroir de la baie, du lac, d’une autre baie ;
célébration,
conjuration des guerres, évocation d’ombres
